Spahn & Rose Celebrates Community Involvement with Big Red Check Day

Bank tellers needed to clear their counters in the wake of Spahn & Rose’s annual Big Red Check Day this past December 19. Dozens of huge checks representing donations to local charities and nonprofit organizations were handed out during a celebratory afternoon.

Spahn & Rose welcomed to its Dubuque location more than a dozen representatives from local charitable groups to commemorate the past year’s community involvement.

“It was great to attend Big Red Check Day to reconnect with the Spahn & Rose leadership who helped make this support possible,” says Rachel Dilling, executive director of Habitat for Humanity Dubuque and Jackson Counties. “It was also amazing to see all the organizations Spahn & Rose has supported through their charitable giving. You get a sense for how much they care about their community members, and it was nice to see the diversity of organizations that received support.”

This past year, the Spahn & Rose Charitable Foundation donated $149,925 to 65 organizations that serve the communities in which Spahn & Rose has stores. Established in 1950, the Foundation supports programs that provide services for higher education, healthy communities and at-risk youth. Over the last three years, the Foundation has donated more than $400,000 to a wide range of nonprofit groups and other worthy causes.

In addition to financial contributions, Spahn & Rose also provides a variety of goods to its beneficiaries, giving the Dubuque and Jackson Habitat for Humanity, among others, donations of certain building materials and discounts on others.

“Monetary support is critical, but discounts and donations of products can make all the difference when we’re working to keep projects affordable and help move a family into a home as quickly as we can,” Dilling says.

The Spahn & Rose Foundation has a deep local connection to the areas the company serves. Spahn & Rose employees will often provide recommendations of organizations to support, and the groups that benefit invariably serve broad, varied and diverse segments of their communities.

“The people at Spahn & Rose really understand that we are all in this world together, and they do their part to give back,” says David Moore, director of the annual fund at MercyOne Dubuque Foundation, a Spahn & Rose Foundation recipient. “We recently attended Big Red Check Day and were able to see how many different organizations Spahn & Rose supports. It was truly amazing and inspirational. Dubuque and our surrounding communities are better places to live because of the gifts Spahn & Rose invests in them.”

December’s Big Red Check Day was the culmination of the Foundation’s historic year of giving in 2019. Last May, Affiliated Distributors honored Spahn & Rose with its Giving Back Award, an honor acknowledging member companies that make significant community contributions.

“Each and every one of these organizations Spahn & Rose supports does outstanding work,” says Spahn & Rose CEO and President Dave Davis. “It’s deeply rewarding to help these organizations that are the foundations of our communities.”
